As part of the moves to ensure proper planning and development, surveyors in Lagos State have called on the residents to approach the office of the Surveyor-General in order to understand the new Lagos mapping.
Speaking at the 2022 Annual General Meeting and Luncheon of the Association of Private Practicing Surveyors of Nigeria, APPSN, held in Lagos, the state chairman of the Association, Ibikunle Adaranijo, said that the changes made to mapping by the state government was causing some misunderstandings between the clients and the Professionals.
He said that the entire Lagos has been remapped and that the remapping has altered the initial mapping did by the experts in the past, saying that residents must be enlightened on the changes so as not to cause frictions between the property owners and the Professional surveyors.
To adequately tackle the issue of building collapse in the state, the surveyors also called on the State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu to mandate the service of surveyors in any building or bridge construction to avert loss of lives and property resulting from building collapse.
The the experts said that surveying is the bedrock of any development across the globe, saying that engagement of the service of a registered surveyor would assist in the kind of development to be made and help in the structural integrity of such project.
He said that the state government can tackle the challenges of building collapse with the compulsory engagement of a surveyor in any building or bridge construction project.
Adaranijo said that the state government must emulate the practice in the developed countries where service of a surveyor would be engaged throughout the duration of a project construction whether building or bridge construction to ensure safety of lives and property. He said that irrespective of whether the project is financed by the government or private individual or firm, the involvement of a surveyor must be made mandatory.
He said: “This is on issue that we have written to the state government about. Even our past leaders have also written to the state government on this even before the last incident of building collapse. In developed countries, anytime you want to build a building more than 2 floors, you must engage the service of a surveyor to ensure that the structure is not sinking. A surveyor must be checking the structure for instance every two weeks to know if the structure is not sinking.
“But in Nigeria generally, people don’t bother about this. The National President of NIS has written to the Lagos State Governor on this and the state government has agreed to form a committee to look into that. A surveyor must be put in place to give update on the state of the structure on the land.
“The way out of building collapse is to key into our suggestions and programs. Before a building collapse, a surveyor must have provided the information if the structure is sinking. We are the foundation of everything before a building is built. Lack involvement of a surveyor is what is responsible for the flood you sometime see on the road. We are the bedrock of any development, even in the bush, a surveyor must first go there.”
