As part of the moves to check dearth of requisite vocational skills among Nigerian artisans and avert disaster arising from building collapse resulting from skill gap, indication have emerged that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration might expose students of technical colleges to foreign trainings.
The Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Scholarship Board, Mr Omotayo Fakolujo, who disclosed this, said that foreign exposure which is being considered by the board would expose the artisans in the state technical schools to the basic technical skills to enable them to favourably compete with their counterparts across the globe.
To assist the indigent students in the technical school, he said that the board will be given N100,000 scholarship annually to all the students in the state’s technical schools, adding that about 300 students had been captured in Epe already while about 1,200 across the state would be in the scheme.
He said exposure to foreign training would help the state address the issue of building collapse and other challenges in the built and engineering sector.
He said: “By so doing, we will be able to increase the skills in the automech, engineering, electronic and other areas, we will also seek approval from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to also give them international exposure. Some of their teachers just came back from Germany. That’s basic thing needs, they will be able to have self-confident in themselves if they are taken to countries like Russia, Ukraine, Germany the problem of unqualified plumber, unqualified electricians and other artisans.”
Meanwhile, Chairman and Trustee RETECH Foundation Ronye Egborge, which presented N50,000 each of the ten best students, explained that the scholarship awards were offered to the top 10 students in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in the entire state in recognition of their outstanding academic performance. He added that there were other 103 scholars from across the Country comprising the top 10 in Anambra, Ebonyi, Edo, Enugu, Delta, Ondo, and Niger States as well as the top student in 33 unity schools across the Country.
“ You are the future leaders of Nigeria; | would like to encourage you to always think of what you can do for your Country and not what your Country can do for you. Continue to work hard to ensure you maintain your academic performance,” he said.
Egborge urged the pupils to imbibe the good citizenship attributes including integrity and honesty in all their dealings and take responsibility for their actions.“Show respect to authority, your school management, teachers and your fellow students. Be selfless, lend a helping hand to one another and be confident in your ability. If you do this consistently, the sky will be your starting place and I believe the future will be very bright for each and every one of you.”
