…Lagos Cooperation college to graduate 104
Worried by the rising rate of unemployment and crime in the country, the Lagos State Cooperative College, yesterday warned the youths to stop the endless search for white-collar jobs and embrace enterpreneurship.
The Provost of the College, Mr Akorede Ojomu, who disclosed at a media conference in commemoration of the maiden convocation ceremonies of the college, said that it is obvious to most Nigerian youths that the continued search for white collar jobs won’t address the unemployment challenges. He said that it was time for the youth to think outside the box and establish a business of their own.
The provost also hinted that the college is ready to graduate 104 in the forthcoming maiden Convocation Ceremony which would feature the award of Professional Diploma certificates, presentation of prizes and conferment of Honourary fellowship of the College to students and distinguished personalities in the State
He explained that the Lagos State Cooperative College falls into a specialized category and it was established to address sector-specific skill gap through the provision of specialized training for a cooperative sub-sector that is oftentimes not on the radar of the financial or conventional media.
The provost added that the state Governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu repositioned the Lagos State Cooperative College for effective from June, 2020, to pursue her mandates as spelt out in the enabling Law. He said that the college would also award of Professional Diploma certificates, present prizes and confer Honourary fellowship of the College to students and distinguished personalities in the State.
He added that the State Government established the Lagos State Cooperative College to promote the acquisition of specialized knowledge towards the development of highly skilled manpower with the capacity for self-employment and job creation.
Ojomu said that the Maiden Convocation Lecture titled “Concern for the 21st Century economy: What roles do cooperatives have to play in the transition to a sustainable economy?“ would be delivered by Mr. Neil Calvert, The Chief Executive Officer and Principal of the United Kingdom Cooperative College (UKCC), Manchester.
The provost hinted that those to be honoured for the role they played in the establishment of the college include: His Royal Majesty, Oniru of Iru Kingdom, Oba Abdulwasiu Gbolahan Lawal, the former Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Agriculture, Mr Yakubu Balogun, former Commissioner for Education, Bar Olayinka Oladunjoje and a permanent secretary in the Ministry of Commerce and Cooperative, Mr Olalekan Akodu.
