Cairo Market Inferno: LASEMA begins investigation

As controversies continue to trail the Cairo Downtown market in Oshodi which destroyed goods worth millions of naira, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, has launched a comprehensive investigation to ascertain the cause of the disaster.

The exact cause of the inferno had generated controversy. While some said raised suspicion that the inferno was caused by possible explosive devices in the market, others said it was caused by power surge and other inflammable items stored in the market.

But speaking during the on-the-spot assessment of the disaster scene, Osanyintolu said he couldn’t categorically speak on the cause of the fire until the investigation is concluded on what triggered the inferno that destroyed property worth millions of naira.

According to him, investigation has commenced to unravel the cause of the fire incident at Cairo Downtown market in Oshodi which occurred around after eight o’clock on Thursday night and
damaged goods and other valuable items.

Dr Oke-Osayintolu who explained that a comprehensive evaluation would be carried out allayed fear of traders that the fire was caused by explosive device, said warned traders and other Lagosian to be safety conscious always.

The LASEMA DG, however condemned the attack on the first responders and vandalization of emergency vehicle by miscreants while making effort to manage the disaster scene.

He expressed dismay that responders were attacked in the process of containing the fire and warned that henceforth anyone caught molesting emergency responders would face the full wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, as Lagosians sympathise with the victims of the markets fire, some of the affected traders lamented that the incident was a huge loss to them with the current economic situation in the country.

They appealed to the state government for assistance to cushion the effect and ameliorate their plights.

The affected shops include 66 shops, 4 offices and 25 containerized shops.
