A Nigerian scientist and researcher, Kafayat Aderonke Yusuf, has received multiple prestigious awards for her groundbreaking research on inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colon cancer at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City.
Yusuf, a PhD student in the Cancer Biology Department at the University, has been recognized by the American Gastroenterology Association (AGA) and the American Association of Cancer Research (AACR) for her outstanding contributions to novel treatments for IBD and colon cancer.
In addition to these recognitions, Yusuf received the Individual Vice Chancellor Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) award at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Dr. Jerrihlyn L. McGee, Vice Chancellor of DEI, praised Yusuf for her exceptional scholarly research and active role in promoting diversity and inclusion within the university community.
Dr. McGee described Yusuf as a distinguished student and a commendable ambassador at the institution. Yusuf expressed her motivation for her rigorous research efforts, highlighting her passion for contributing to advancements in treating IBD and colon cancer. Her dedication to research is paralleled by her active involvement in various organizations, including serving as the current President of the Student of African Descent Association at KUMC, former president of the Graduate Student Council at KUMC, member of the American Cancer Society, AGA, AACR and Women in Medicine and Science (WIMS).
Yusuf’s academic journey is a testament to her dedication and excellence. To date, she has received 14 awards of excellence starting from University of Ilorin where she graduated with first-class honors. She also earned her Master of Science in Biology from Missouri State University with a fully funded scholarship.
The former University of Ilorin scholar’s academic feat continued to shine at the KU Medical Center, where she has received 9 awards so far. Yusuf’s achievements reflect her dedication to research, education, and fostering an inclusive academic environment, making her an outstanding figure in the scientific community and a source of inspiration for many aspiring researchers.
